Short answer: commercial buyers rarely choose between "build everything yourself" and "buy a finished greenhouse." The practical options are a component package installed by the buyer, a supplier package with installation supervision, or a turnkey scope. The lowest quote is only useful after structure, systems, civil work, logistics, installation and commissioning are compared on the same boundary.

Do not confuse custom engineering with raw-material construction

A commercial greenhouse should be configured for its crop, site and climate even when the frame comes as a standard product family. Customization can include bay layout, covering, design loads, vents, screens, cooling, heating, irrigation and controls. It does not require fabricating an untested structure from raw steel on site.

If a local team will fabricate or modify structural parts, the project needs clear engineering ownership, material specifications, welding or bolting procedures, corrosion protection and inspection records. The buyer should know who signs the design and who accepts changes made during construction.

Normalize the full installed scope

Compare proposals line by line. Include surveys, permits, foundations, grading, drainage, utility upgrades, freight, duties, unloading, local machinery, labor, accommodation, startup materials, commissioning, training and spare parts. Keep taxes and financing outside the supplier comparison unless every proposal treats them the same way.

Do not publish or rely on one price per square metre without a stated country, structure, covering, system level and delivery boundary. A low structure price can sit beside a high installed cost if the buyer must add civil work, environmental systems and integration later.

Use a responsibility matrix to expose missing work

List each task and assign design, supply, installation, inspection and acceptance. The matrix should cover the structure, foundation interface, covering, vents, screens, climate systems, irrigation, electrical work, controls, drainage, freight and commissioning. If two parties share a task, state who leads and which document controls the interface.

Acceptance is more than counting packages. Define drawing approval, material checks, bolt or connection inspection, water tests, motor direction, sensor calibration, alarm tests, manual overrides and operator training. Record open items before the supplier leaves the site.

Also define the handover record. A useful file set includes approved drawings, field changes, equipment data, controller backups, test results, warranty contacts and a spare-parts list. Name the party that keeps each record and the language required for operators. This matters most when the frame supplier, local civil contractor and system installers are different companies.

Build-versus-buy RFQ inputs

  • Country, site coordinates, crop, growing method, target area and expansion plan.
  • Wind, snow, rain, seismic, temperature and humidity design information.
  • Structure, covering, ventilation, screens, heating, cooling, irrigation and control scope.
  • Available power, fuel, water, drainage, roads, unloading space and local equipment.
  • Buyer labor skill, local contractor capability and preferred installation model.
  • Required drawings, manuals, packing list, spare parts, supervision and training.
  • Commissioning tests, acceptance records, warranty start and after-sales response route.
