Select a greenhouse heating system by the heat required under agreed outside conditions, how that heat reaches the crop, available utilities and the response to equipment failure. Floor area alone is not enough to specify heater capacity. Ask for the calculation inputs and the boundary of the supplied system.
Establish the heating duty
Provide the location, greenhouse geometry, covering specification, desired operating temperatures and planned thermal screens. Identify ventilation and air leakage assumptions. Ask the designer to explain how the design outside temperature was chosen and what happens when conditions are colder.
Keep crop temperature targets separate from frost-protection objectives. A system intended to prevent freezing may not maintain a production temperature throughout the building. Equipment ratings must also distinguish fuel input from useful delivered heat.
Compare the complete installation
| Option | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|
| Warm-air heating | How is air distributed, where are sensors placed, and how are combustion products managed? |
| Hot-water heating | What pipes, pumps, controls, insulation and expansion provisions are included? |
| Root-zone heating | Which crop-root requirements does it serve, and what supplies the remaining air-heating duty? |
| Heat-pump system | What capacity and operating limits apply at the proposed outside conditions? |
| Backup heat | What remains available when the main fuel, electrical supply or controller is unavailable? |
Qualified designers and installers must address combustion, ventilation, electrical protection and local requirements. Do not improvise an unvented combustion arrangement to protect a crop.
Check distribution and controls
Ask how the layout limits hot and cold areas around the crop. Review obstructions, return-air paths and sensor exposure. Where heating and ventilation interact, require an operating sequence that explains both temperature and humidity management.
For water-based systems, include water quality, freezing conditions and maintenance access in the design discussion. Any treatment fluid must be suitable for the equipment and handled under its approved safety instructions. A generic antifreeze concentration is not a project specification.
Accept the system against documented tests
Record installed equipment and settings. Agree checks for representative temperature measurements, circulation, staged operation, alarms and recovery after an approved interruption. Test failure responses without exposing people or crops to uncontrolled equipment operation.
University of Florida guidance discusses heating systems by heat source and distribution method. Its maintenance guidance also addresses combustion exhaust and sensor placement. These are background principles; site-specific sizing remains an engineering task.
Procurement questions
Should I choose the lowest fuel cost?
Compare delivered heat, capital work, maintenance, utility availability and operating constraints. A low unit fuel price does not describe the full system cost.
Does a spare heater provide full backup?
Check shared dependencies. Two heaters may still rely on the same electrical supply, fuel connection or controller.
Provide Chengfei Greenhouse with the location, covering, crop requirements and available energy sources. Request a clearly bounded proposal with calculation assumptions and local installation responsibilities.
