An automatic greenhouse vent opener responds to the temperature around its actuator. It does not measure the temperature of every plant, and its first movement does not mean the roof opening is large enough to cool the house. If a vent opens while the outdoor air feels cold, compare the temperature beside the actuator with a shaded reading at crop height before changing the adjustment.

Most wax-cylinder openers work without an electrical sensor. The mechanism has to warm and cool, so a quick change in sunlight or a brief temperature reading can give a misleading impression of its setting. Identify the opener model and keep its instructions beside your observations: adjustment, lifting capacity, vent dimensions and seasonal handling differ between products.
Measure the actuator and the crop separately
Use two thermometers or data loggers during a sunny morning. Put one near the power tube without touching it; place the other in a ventilated radiation shield at representative crop height. A thermometer lying in direct sun or against the greenhouse frame is measuring a different condition from shaded air around the leaves.
Record the time, both temperatures and the opening gap as the greenhouse warms. Add a shaded outdoor reading if available. Continue as the house cools. Note when the vent first moves, its largest opening and whether it closes freely. This is a practical observation sheet, not a calibration certificate.
The Bayliss Mk 3 instructions describe checking temperature near the power tube and adjusting the starting point. Apply those instructions only to that model. A temperature range printed for another opener is not an interchangeable setting.
Check movement before changing the temperature setting
Inspect the vent when conditions are suitable and follow the manufacturer's procedure for safely disengaging the mechanism. Keep hands clear of hinges and stored spring force. A vent that sticks on a seal, rubs a frame or catches a shade net needs a mechanical correction before its temperature response can be judged.
Check the complete opening arc. A cord that looks loose with the window shut may become tight when it opens. Look for a bent hinge, loose bracket or retaining chain that reaches its limit too soon. Photograph the obstruction and the model label so the installer can identify the correct replacement part.
Do not drill a new attachment point, shorten a rod or add weight as an improvised temperature adjustment. Those changes can alter the leverage and load. Use the mounting positions and vent limits specified for the actual unit.

Do not use a single observation to condemn the cylinder. A repeated failure under recorded conditions is more useful to the supplier than an outdoor temperature and a photograph of an open window.
A fully open roof vent may still provide too little cooling
Natural ventilation needs an air path through the building. Roof openings cannot guarantee useful airflow through a dense crop when replacement air is restricted. The UMass guide to greenhouse ventilation distinguishes ventilation arrangements and their dependence on the available openings.
Walk the intended air path from the low inlet to the roof outlet. Record doors, side vents, insect screens, internal partitions and closed curtains. Make one reversible change at a time and compare readings under similar weather. Lowering the opening setting cannot compensate indefinitely for a window that is too small or an inlet that is blocked. If the crop approaches its temperature limit, use the site's established cooling response while the ventilation fault is assessed; do not wait for a new adjustment to prove itself during a heat event.
Keep the final setting, mounting photographs and the warm-up/cool-down record with the greenhouse maintenance information. Recheck after fitting shade, replacing a vent or changing the crop layout, because each can alter the conditions the opener is responding to.
